Recognizing the signs: Are you experiencing hearing loss?

alt

Hearing loss is much more common than you think. In fact, the World Health Organization reports that by 2050, nearly 2.5 billion people are projected to have some degree of hearing loss.* But recognizing the signs of hearing loss isn’t always easy, because some indicators can be more subtle. If you've noticed changes in your hearing or suspect that someone you know is experiencing hearing difficulties, read on to understand the signs and learn about the importance of taking action towards addressing a hearing loss.

Here are some of the common signs of hearing loss

Muffled sounds
If you find that sounds seem less clear or muffled, it could be a sign of hearing loss. This is often one of the earliest indicators.

Difficulty understanding spoken words
Struggling to understand conversations, especially in noisy environments, is a common sign. You may also find yourself asking people to repeat themselves frequently.

Avoidance of social settings
People with hearing loss often withdraw from social situations to avoid the frustration of not being able to hear and understand conversations, or because they become too tired during or after their social engagement.

Increasing the volume
If you're often turning up the volume on the TV, radio, or your electronic devices, it might be time to consider the possibility of hearing loss.

Tinnitus
Ringing or buzzing in the ears, known as tinnitus, can be associated with hearing loss. If you experience this symptom, it's essential to address it promptly.
